The LEGO Art theme, launched in 2020, offers fans a creative way to combine their love of building with iconic pop culture and fine art. These sets feature mosaic-style builds, allowing creators to construct famous images like portraits of The Beatles, Iron Man, and Star Wars characters. Designed with adults in mind, LEGO® Art sets are perfect for display, providing a relaxing and rewarding building experience. In an exciting new addition to this lineup, LEGO is set to release a LEGO Mona Lisa set. The Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century, is one of the most famous and widely recognized artworks in the world, celebrated for its mysterious expression and detailed composition. As one of history’s most iconic paintings, we, at Investabrick are eager to see how LEGO will capture the beauty and intrigue of this timeless masterpiece in brick form!
Set Details
The LEGO Art Mona Lisa (31213) set offers art enthusiasts a chance to recreate Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic masterpiece in a unique and interactive way. This bold interpretation features a striking blue hue, reflecting the original colours used by da Vinci over 500 years ago, before time altered the paint’s appearance. Builders can enjoy this immersive experience solo or with friends, assembling the famous painting piece by piece. For a modern twist, the eyes of the Mona Lisa can be replaced with blank pieces, creating a more abstract version of the artwork. Displayed in an elegant gold frame, this wall art makes a stunning home decor piece or a thoughtful gift for art lovers. The frame is detachable, allowing it to be used for other LEGO Art creations. The set also includes a booklet with detailed instructions, and scanning the QR code unlocks a Soundtrack that dives into the timeless appeal of the Mona Lisa.

Theme Analysis
LEGO Mona Lisa is the 18th set to be released within the LEGO Art theme, of which 12 have retired to date. LEGO Art was only launched in 2020 and it is still a relatively new LEGO theme with a small sample size but our initial evaluation of the theme is that it is very much a LEGO set pickers theme from an investment perspective, with a broad range of performance from the retired sets to date.
On average the theme returns average annualised growth of 10% but within that there are some sets at or just below RRP and a few sets that have made large gains. LEGO Jim Lee Batman Collection (31205) only retired last December but has already seen a 45% uplift in value from its $120 RRP already, whilst LEGO The Beatles (31198) has seen nearly 50% uplift in value since retiring at the end of 2021 (16% annualised growth).
Set Number | Set Name | Retired Date | RRP | Current Value | Total Growth | Annualised Growth |
31198 | The Beatles | Dec-21 | $120 | $178 | 48% | 16% |
31202 | Disney’s Mickey Mouse | Dec-22 | $120 | $119 | -1% | 0% |
31199 | Marvel Studios Iron Man | Dec-21 | $120 | $152 | 27% | 9% |
31205 | Jim Lee Batman Collection | Dec-23 | $120 | $174 | 45% | 70% |
Comparable Sets
The Miscellaneous sub-theme is a further extension of the performance we have seen in the wider LEGO Art theme with one very successful set and the others which haven’t performed as well and are currently valued below RRP.
The very successful set is LEGO World Map (31203) which retired last December but has already seen more than 50% increase in value post retirement. LEGO Floral Art (31207), LEGO Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe (31197) and LEGO Art Project – Create Together (21226) have fared less well.
Set Number | Set Name | Retired Date | RRP | Current Value | Total Growth | Annualised Growth |
31197 | Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe | Dec-21 | $120 | $100 | -17% | -7% |
31207 | Floral Art | Dec-23 | $80 | $65 | -19% | -26% |
21226 | Art Project – Create Together | Dec-22 | $120 | $83 | -31% | -20% |
31203 | World Map | Dec-23 | $250 | $383 | 53% | 84% |
Conclusion
Obviously, we will reassess LEGO Mona Lisa once it has been at retail sale for a reasonable period and we will continue to assess the other sets within the LEGO Art theme when they retire but for now all the evidence to date points to LEGO Art being a set pickers theme and we think the concept of the Mona Lisa makes for a great LEGO Art set. Then it boils down to whether you like LEGO’s re-creation of the classic painting and that is surely going to divide opinions (and even comparisons to a UK comedian!)
If you are a LEGO fan, an Art fan, a Da Vinci fan, all of the above or just think the set looks great then head to LEGO now and pre order your set!
