Theme Analysis
The LEGO Advent Calendars doesn’t actually have its own LEGO theme, the LEGO Advent Calendar sets all sit within a Seasonal sub-theme within each of the LEGO main themes.
We have taken a look at all of the LEGO Advent calendars as one group and can see that across 65 retired LEGO Advent Calendar sets the average total growth is 50% and the average annualised growth is 4%.
Narrowing this down to the parent themes, the pick of the bunch is LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendars which provide average annualised growth of 5%, whereas the one to avoid is clearly LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendars which on average are worth less than their RRPs.
What can be seen is from an investment perspective, the earlier years sets were good solid investments but the more recent sets are not, with sets from 2023 and 2022 especially showing double digit losses from their RRPs. We expect this is driven by the high level of discounting which occurs just before and immediately after Christmas as befits a seasonal product.

Conclusion
At this time of year, these sets can only be recommended to be bought as presents for LEGO fans and not as LEGO investments based on the performance of the retired sets from the last few years.
If you are looking to LEGO Advent Calendars from an investment perspective, there is one approach that can be utilised which is to buy the LEGO Advent Calendar sets in the sales post Christmas where if the last few years are anything to go buy discounts of between 20% and 50% can become available.
Buying at or close to a 50% discount, holding the LEGO Advent Calendar investment until the following Christmas period (or even the one after) and then selling at RRP or just above can bring a return.
If pushed to chose one of the LEGO Advent Calendar sets we would plump for the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar due to the better performance of the theme previously, the lower price per brick and the included LEGO minifigures.
