10307 LEGO Eiffel Tower | Build this huge LEGO Icons model if you have the space

Published: 1 year ago

Last Updated: 1 week ago

10307 LEGO Eiffel Tower. Build this huge LEGO Icons model if you have the space. As one of the most visited countries, France is bursting with culture, spectacular art and architecture, extraordinary food and wine, and some of the world’s most iconic historic monuments. No visit to France, and its capital city Paris, is complete without a tour of the Eiffel Tower, built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, which was to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution. Standing at 1083 feet tall the iron lattice structure is climbed by 6 million people every year who can then take in the spectacular panoramic views Paris has to offer.

Set Details

Finally released to the market in November 2022, many LEGO® fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting to get an eyeful of this towering set.

Standing at nearly 5ft tall, Lego Icons set 10307; Eiffel Tower, is an enormous build with a sky-high price tag to match, but with 10001 pieces the set is a true showstopper. Even though the original Eiffel tower took just a little over 2 years to build, it is hoped that building this LEGO masterpiece won’t take as long.

The model is built in 4 sections, closely following the way the real tower was constructed, giving the LEGO builder an understanding of Gustave Eiffel’s engineering excellence. As well as structural arches, supports and cross braces, so many other real-life details have been incorporated in the set, including gardens, 3 observation platforms, lifts, and broadcast tower.

Unsurprisingly, some of the building elements are repetitive, but with a range of construction techniques it is still an enjoyable build for those looking for a momentous display piece.

The iconic landmark is the flagship model in the new LEGO® Travel and History series and will appeal to adult travel or history lovers, as well as those who love a LEGO challenge!

Theme Analysis

The Icons theme is a broad one, covering a wide range of sub themes and has recently seen a trend towards some very big, high piece count statement sets including this and 10294 the Titanic.

Of the retired sets, most are at a much lower price point than this set and show very mixed performance investment wise.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
10257 Carousel 31/12/2019 $200 $403 102% 16%
10261 Roller Coaster 31/12/2021 $380 $405 7% 2%
10268 Vestas Wind Turbine 31/12/2020 $200 $273 36% 9%

Comparable Set Analysis

Its very hard to find direct comparators for this set as it is the first released within the sub-theme of Landmarks within the Icons theme. The most comparable sets are within the buildings sub theme within the Icons theme.

The 5 sets below are the closest to the new Landmark sub-theme, of which the bottom 4 have now retired. As we can see 3 of the sets have been very underwhelming annualised growth wise since retiring (1%, 3% and 4%) with only 10253 Big Ben offering decent annualised growth of 15%.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
10214 Tower Bridge 31/12/2012 $240 $311 30% 2%
10234 Sydney Opera House 31/12/2016 $320 $378 18% 2%
10253 Big Ben 31/12/2018 $250 $392 57% 8%
10256 Taj Mahal 31/12/2020 $370 $412 11% 3%
10276 Colosseum 31/12/2023 $550 $857 56% 80%

Conclusion

Its very hard to recommend a set this big and this expensive as an investment, especially when it likely has 3 years or more until it will be retired. Add in that it is the first set within a new sub-theme and of the closest comparators we can find, only 1 of the 4 has seen a decent financial return then for now we will be avoiding this as an investment.

That said, based on the performance of Big Ben post retirement we will keep an eye on the other sets above too, especially the Colosseum to see how that does post retirement with a view to potentially buying this closer to its retirement and ideally at a discount to the RRP.
