Another set to have more than doubled in value is the LEGO Icons Maersk Line Triple-E (10241) which retired in Dec-14 and has produced annualised returns of 10%.

Comparable Set Analysis

Within the LEGO Icons theme the Vehicles sub-theme is strong delivering annualised returns of 13%, which increases to 16% when we look specifically at just the cars in that theme, so there is strong evidence that this will be an excellent investment for when it retires.

10242 MINI Cooper MK VII 31/08/2015 $100 $205 105% 8%
10248 Ferrari F40 31/12/2017 $100 $332 232% 19%
10262 James Bond Aston Martin DB5 31/12/2021 $150 $207 38% 12%
77942 Fiat 500 31/12/2021 $101 $144 43% 14%

Conclusion

This set is definitely an investment for us, just not currently. Having just been released and only available at the full RRP, whilst we think this is a very strong set, we are happy to wait to add it to our collection down the line, rather than tying up money on a set that is likely to have 2 or 3 years left on the retail shelf.
