42111 LEGO Dom’s Dodge Charger | One LEGO Technic set you should flip with the available discounts

Published: 1 year ago

Last Updated: 1 week ago

42111 LEGO Dom’s Dodge Charger. One LEGO Technic set to flip with the available discounts. Whether you are a Fast & Furious fan or a fast car fanatic, you will get your motor running with Dom’s Dodge Charger, a great LEGO Technic set, full of authentic details, based on 1970s Dodge Charger R/T.

Based upon street racing, the lifestyle and the people behind it, the Fast & Furious action film franchise, distributed by Universal Pictures, has exploded over the years since its first film release in 2001 to now include short films, a television series, live shows, toys, video games and theme park attractions.

Set Details

Portrayed by Vin Diesel, Dominic "Dom" Toretto is the main protagonist of The Fast and the Furious franchise. LEGO set 42111; Dom’s Dodge Charger, enables Fast & Furious and car fans alike to build a great replica of Dom’s iconic vehicle. With 1,077 pieces, this is not a large LEGO Technic set by any means, but with a model version of the iconic V8 engine under the opening hood, moving pistons, 2 Nitrous Oxide cans and steering system, the car is full of features. Aimed at builders aged 10 +, this is great for display, or role-playing high-speed car adventures.

Investment Potential

Normally this wouldn’t be a stand out set that we would look at for investment purposes, however, our interest comes mainly from the fact that this is a set that is expected to be retired in the foreseeable future and is currently available at a sizeable discount from its RRP (£70 at Asda, £80 at Amazon, £90 at Smyths Toys at time of writing)

Whether the Fast and Furious sub-theme is strong enough to deliver strong underlying growth in years to come is uncertain, and potentially unlikely, coupled with adequate if not stellar price growth for Technic sets, is likely to limit longer term future growth.

Launch RRP 120
5th Year Value $115
Theme Growth 6%
Sub Theme Growth 0%

Theme Analysis

The Technics theme is one of the oldest LEGO themes, the first model being released in 1977! There are 13 sub-themes and there have been 462 different sets, the vast majority of which are now retired. The majority of technic models are vehicles with cars, motorbikes, planes, helicopters, cranes and trucks.

Whilst interesting sets to build, and for younger LEGO enthusiasts to play with, it has never been seen as a strong theme to invest in, with an underlying annual growth of 5%.

Some example Technic sets:

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
42009 Mobile Crane MK II 31/12/2015 $220 $411 87% 7%
42025 Cargo Plane 31/12/2015 $140 $281 101% 8%
42066 Air Race Jet 31/07/2018 $160 $192 20% 3%
42127 The Batman - Batmobile 01/01/2024 $100 $93 -7% -9%

Comparable Set Analysis

We have looked retired Technic car sets to get a better understanding of the likely future value of the set.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
42009 Mobile Crane MK II 31/12/2015 $220 $411 87% 7%
42025 Cargo Plane 31/12/2015 $140 $281 101% 8%
42066 Air Race Jet 31/07/2018 $160 $192 20% 3%
42127 The Batman - Batmobile 01/01/2024 $100 $93 -7% -9%

Conclusion

Technics sets have an underlying annual growth of 5% which once added to the expected uplift in price from retirement coming within the next 12 months gives us a decent price projection for the short to medium term. Add in the fact that we can currently purchase the set at a discount of more than 25% to the RRP then this appears a decent investment but not necessarily for one to hold for that long post retirement. The only reason we may chose for the longer term would be if there was clearly a high future demand for the Fast and Furious related sets, as currently this genre is an unknown from a LEGO collectors’ perspective.
