Theme Analysis

The overall LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes is a touch disappointing from an investment perspective with average annualised growth of 6% and The Dark Knight Trilogy sub-theme fairs even worse at just 4% annualised growth. That said there are some very good sets in amongst the general mediocre performances.

We have looked at the batman sets from the theme at higher RRPs and whilst most are in line with the theme performance the one real standout is LEGO 1989 Batmobile which has seen over 60% growth in value since retiring at the end of 2021 (27% annualised growth).

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
10937 Batman: Arkham Asylum Breakout 31/12/2014 $160 $233 46% 4%
76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave 31/12/2017 $270 $241 -11% -2%
76139 1989 Batmobile 31/12/2021 $250 $433 73% 22%
76161 1989 Batwing 31/12/2022 $200 $210 5% 3%

Comparable Set Analysis

Looking at the Dark Knight Trilogy sub-theme we see a similar picture albeit from a very small sample size. The 2 older sets that have been retired close to 10 years have seen annualised growth of just 3% and 4% whereas the recently retired LEGO Batman Tumbler: Scarecrow Showdown (76239) has grown nearly 30% in its year since retirement, albeit at a lower price point.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
76001 The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase 31/12/2014 $40 $69 72% 6%
76023 The Tumbler 31/12/2015 $200 $330 65% 6%
76239 Batmobile Tumbler: Scarecrow Showdown 31/12/2022 $40 $59 48% 24%

Conclusion

Sadly, from an investment perspective this theme and sub theme doesn’t offer enough encouragement to make this a must buy investment for us, especially with a high price per brick, albeit slightly offset by 2 excellent, unique and valuable minifigures. There are some successful sets in amongst making it a theme you can successfully pick from but we think there are better investments available. That said it’s a great looking set and we wouldn’t deter DC fans to buying this at the current discount at Amazon to build and display.
