It is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. Not only is it the most important holiday in China, it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and also countries with a large overseas Chinese population.
As a relatively new LEGO® series, the Chinese Traditional Festivals sets are currently in their fourth year, appealing to a wide audience as LEGO aim to continue to capture imaginations as a global brand celebrating different cultures.
Set Details
Released for 2022, and celebrating the Year of the Tiger, LEGO set 80109, recreates a New Year Ice Festival, complete with a host of winter activities based around a frozen skating lake. Although this may not be a traditional way to celebrate the Chinese New Year, inspiration for the set could be found in the Harbin International Ice and Snow festival, located in in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China.
Aimed at ages 8+ and with 1,519-pieces this highly detailed set is a great family build. Numerous additional elements including equipment rental shop, sweet potato vendor’s cart, chun ice sculpture, penguin-shaped sled, ski slope and more can be animated by no less than 13 minifigures as they enjoy the ice skating rink and it’s surroundings. The Minifigures in this set really add to the fun with their accessories which include ice skates, a hockey puck, smartphone and tools. To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, one of the Minifigures is even dressed in a tiger outfit.
The set not only makes a great interactive toy, but also a large centrepiece measuring 17 cm high, 39 cm wide and 26 cm deep.

Investment Potential
The Chinese New Year models within the Chinese Traditional Festivals sub-theme are consistent with the sub theme in that all of the models have short shelf lives and have decent post retirement growth. Readily available to purchase currently from the LEGO store for £89.99
albeit retiring in December so don’t hesitate to purchase.The value is strengthened by the 13 minifigures, all of which are unique to this set, which together have a combined value of close to 1/3rd of the sets overall value. Hol258 Year of the Tiger Guy is the most valuable of these with a current value of £10.
