Theme Analysis
When we are looking for potential LEGO investments, LEGO Super Mario is not the first theme that usually comes to mind. Historically returns have been poor since the launch in 2020, with the average retired set currently worth slightly less than was paid for it! Albeit there have been some successful sets within the theme and at Investabrick we think there if ever there is a LEGO Super Mario set that would stand out as a long term investment it is this model of the iconic Super Mario Kart, that said we will want to see how it performs at retail sale before we add it to our “must buy” lists!
Some of the best retired LEGO Super Mario sets include LEGO Toad’s Special Hideaway (77907) which has more than trebled in value from its $20 RRP to its current $76 value (37% annualised growth), LEGO Luigi’s Mansion Lab and Poltergust (71397) which has nearly doubled in value since retiring at the end of 2022 (35% annualised growth) and LEGO Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle (71369) which has increased in value by 30% since retiring.
Conclusion
Is this a rock solid LEGO investment opportunity? No not yet, it comes from a weak theme but if ever a model is going to outperform this theme it is surely this LEGO Mario Kart set. We will hold judgement on it’s investment potential for now albeit it is one we are keen to see how it performs that’s for sure.
Is it a must build (and display) for fans of Super Mario, gamers who have played Super Mario Kart for years, LEGO builders and LEGO collectors then definitely. I will be pre-ordering mine from LEGO to be delivered on May 15th!
