Theme Analysis

LEGO Star Wars continues to be one of the optimal themes for LEGO investment delivering annualised growth of 12% over 900+ sets and nearly 25 years.

And the signs continue to be strong, 24 LEGO Star Wars sets retired at the end of 2022 and they averaged growth of 19% in their first year after retirement (the 2021 retirees have averaged 47% across the 2 years as well!)

We looked below at some sets at a similar price point including LEGO 7751 Ahsoka’s Starfighter and Vulture Droid which has seen nearly 500% growth (13% annualised) since retiring in 2009 and LEGO 7671 AT-AP Walker which has seen 330% growth (11% annualised) in the same timeframe.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
75534 Darth Vader 31/12/2018 $40 $99 148% 17%
7658 Y-wing Fighter 31/07/2008 $40 $111 178% 6%
7671 AT-AP Walker 31/12/2009 $40 $169 322% 10%
7751 Ahsoka's Starfighter and Vulture Droid 31/12/2009 $40 $236 490% 13%

Comparable Set Analysis

The Mandalorian sub-theme is a new one still and we don’t have enough data to look at a theme averages confidently, but that said the initial performance of the retiring sets has been very positive.

These have included LEGO AT-ST Raider (75254) which has seen 46% growth since retiring at the end of 2021 LEGO Imperial Armored Marauder (75311) which has seen 30% growth since retiring at the end of 2022.

All 3 sets have delivered annualised growth in excess of 20% in the short time since retiring and is definitely a sub-theme to be keeping an eye on.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
75254 AT-ST Raider 31/12/2021 $50 $48 -4% -1%
75267 Mandalorian Battle Pack 31/12/2021 $15 $21 40% 13%
75311 Imperial Armored Marauder 31/12/2022 $40 $55 38% 20%

Conclusion

This appears to be another wonderful LEGO Star Wars investment. Great returns from the overall theme, some very promising signs from what is a new sub-theme, retiring this year and with decent minifigures.
