75257 LEGO Millennium Falcon | Avoid this LEGO Star Wars model from a poorly performing sub-theme!

Published: 1 year ago

Last Updated: 1 week ago

75257 LEGO Millennium Falcon. Avoid this LEGO Star Wars model from a poorly performing sub-theme. Instantly recognisable in this galaxy and beyond, the Millennium Falcon is an iconic spaceship first designed by Joe Johnston for the movie Star Wars™ in 1977. It has since featured in a host of Star Wars movies, playing a vital role in some of the greatest victories of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. Its striking basic shape is defined by two convex saucers welded together, a pair of front-facing mandibles and an outrigger-style, side-mounted cockpit with transparisteel viewports. Over time, successive owners either upgraded or downgraded every system according to their personal specifications, with the freighter ending up becoming a unique ship.

As the success and cult status of the movies has grown, so has the franchise, with every imaginable product being sold. It appeared in the 2014 animated film The LEGO® Movie in LEGO form. So, it is no surprise that there are also hundreds of LEGO sets dedicated to Star Wars and at least six dedicated to the greatest spaceship that has ever existed.

Set Details

Compared to the LEGO Millennium Falcon™ 75192, released in 2017 which is one of the largest LEGO sets of all time, set 75257, released in 2019 is much more in the price range of most LEGO and Star Wars fans and along with its giant big brother, are the only two LEGO Millennium Falcon detailed models still available for sale through the LEGO site.

Aimed at builders aged 9+ and with 1353 pieces, this smaller set is still full of detail, including rotating top and bottom gun turrets, 2 spring-loaded shooters ready for battle, a lowering ramp and an opening cockpit with space for 2 minifigures. 7 LEGO Star Wars characters are found in the set; Finn, Chewbacca, C-3PO, Lando Calrissian and Boolio minifigures, plus R2-D2 and D-O LEGO droid figures which will appeal to those who wish to build, play, display or invest.

Investment Potential

The general Star Wars theme is a very popular one, both from a building but also an investing perspective, spanning nearly 50 sub-themes and approaching 900 sets. Historic performance has seen consistent price gains post retirement and look set to continue.

This set is currently available at an RRP of £149.99 at LEGO or lightly cheaper at £140 at Argos.

Launch RRP 170
5th Year Value $306

Sub Theme Growth 0%

Theme Analysis

The Rise of Skywalker sub-theme (Episode 9 in the Star Wars series) consists of just 12 sets from 2019/2020 and this is the final one to be retired. The performance post retirement of 10 of the sets has been very disappointing with only a few sets making small profits and some currently worth less than their RRP.

The one exception is 77901 Sith Trooper bust, a set that was only available to purchase for one day at the LEGO booth of San Diego’s Comic Con in 2019 with only 3,000 sets produced. What cost $45 is worth more than 10x that much just over 3 years later!

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
75250 Pasaana Speeder Chase 31/12/2020 $40 $48 20% 5%
75278 D-O 31/07/2021 $70 $76 9% 2%
75284 Knights of Ren Transport Ship 31/12/2021 $70 $74 6% 2%
77901 Sith Trooper Bust 21/07/2019 $43 $595 1,284% 66%

Comparable Set Analysis

Looking at the closest comparators within the sub-theme shows the same pattern. One set with some growth but 3 sets currently worth less than the sets costs at retail.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
75249 Resistance Y-wing Starfighter 31/12/2021 $70 $79 13% 5%
75256 Kylo Ren's Shuttle 31/12/2021 $130 $178 37% 12%
75272 Sith TIE Fighter 31/07/2021 $80 $68 -15% -5%
75273 Poe Dameron's X-wing Fighter 31/12/2021 $90 $91 1% 0%

Conclusion

A very disappointing sub theme performance wise once you remove the Comic Con promotional item makes it impossible for us to recommend investing the last remaining set available for retail sale within that theme.

Whilst the Millennium Falcon is clearly a popular model, we would rather push the boat out and but the bigger brother from the Ultimate Collector Series, 75192 Millennium Falcon. Please read our detailed article here.
