LEGO Star Wars sets are a hit because they capture the magic of the Star Wars universe in brick form, catering to fans of all ages and budgets. The Star Wars LEGO range is incredible, from small, affordable sets perfect for quick builds to massive, intricate models that are true collector's items. Take the LEGO Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (75252), for instance—a colossal 4784 piece set that came with a hefty price tag but offered an impressive build and display experience. Now, LEGO has released a new version of the LEGO Imperial Star Destroyer (75394), celebrating LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary. This version is slightly kinder on the pocket than the mighty LEGO 75252 and includes a fantastic 25^th anniversary Cal Kestis Minifigure from the Jedi Survivor video game series. It also includes LEGO Darth Vader and LEGO Stormtrooper Minifigures. The set is due to be released on the 1^st of August 2024 and can be pre ordered now, but will it be one that we at Investabrick will be rushing to purchase?

Set Details

The LEGO Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (75394) could be a must-have for fans, featuring an array of impressive details and functionalities. This 1,555-piece set includes a hidden foldout carry handle for easy flying, along with two spring-loaded shooters for battle action. The lift-off top panel and foldout side panels offer convenient access to the highly detailed interior, which boasts a bridge, command room, break room, armory, and various control panels. Additionally, it includes a cargo box with Kyber Crystal and thermal detonator elements. We love that this set comes with seven LEGO Star Wars minifigures: Darth Vader, Commander Praji, an Imperial Gunner, an Imperial Navy Trooper, a Stormtrooper, and a special 25th anniversary minifigure of Cal Kestis. Measuring over 16 cm high, 46 cm long and 29 cm deep this set captures the essence of the Star Wars universe while celebrating LEGO Star Wars' 25th anniversary.

Investment Potential

A 25^th anniversary LEGO Star Wars model of the ever popular Imperial Star Destroyer. What is not to love? But does it make a good investment? This model comes with over 1,500 pieces for the $160 / £150 RRP, comes with 7 great LEGO minifigures and is due to be launched at the start of August, although is already available on the LEGO website to pre-order now!

Theme Analysis

Another upcoming launch for the LEGO Star Wars theme. First launched in 1999, this year is the 25^th anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars theme and we are getting close to there being 1,000 sets, with almost 900 of them retired. The performance of average annualised growth of 12% across such a large sample size and time scale is phenomenal, but here at Investabrick we still think there is a need to find the very best of the Star Wars sets to recommend as LEGO investments going forward.

The Episode IV sub-theme within LEGO Star Wars now has over 50 sets within it and almost all of these are now retired. Average annualised growth of 9% is below the overall Star Wars average. We have looked at some of the sets within the LEGO Star Wars Episode IV sub-theme below.

These include LEGO Mos Eisley Cantina (4501) which is now worth more than 10 times its $30 RRP since retiring 20 years ago (13% annualised growth), LEGO Sandcrawler (10144) which has almost trebled its $140 RRP since retiring in 2008 (7% annualised growth) and LEGO Imperial Landing Craft (75221) which has seen a 60% increase in value since retiring in 2019 (11% annualised growth).

Comparable Set Analysis

For comparable sets we have looked at the prior incarnations within the LEGO Star Wars theme of LEGO Star Destroyer sets and even more specifically LEGO Imperial Star Destroyer sets.

To date there have been 11 LEGO Star Destroyer sets that have retired and 5 LEGO Imperial Star Destroyer sets that have retired (of which 3 were within this theme and 2 within the LEGO UCS sub-theme) and we have taken a closer look at these below.

What is clear is the Imperial Star Destroyer is a popular model consistently across multiple iterations with all of them delivering double digit average annualised growth since retiring. And the most recent retiree of the group, LEGO 75252; the recently retired Ultimate Collector Series model has already seen over 50% price growth from its $700 RRP since retiring 18 months ago at the end of 2022.

Of the other sets, the three within the Episode IV sub-theme have all tripled or quadrupled in value from their RRP over periods of 10-15 years in total, the pick of them being LEGO 75055 which tripled in value from its $130 RRP since retiring in 2015.

Conclusion

This is a hard one for us to assess pre launch. The pros are that it comes from the LEGO Star Wars Theme, every LEGO imperial Star Destroyer model to date has seen average annualised growth in excess of 10%. It is s a 25 year anniversary model and has a reasonable 10c/10p price per brick as well as coming with 7 amazing LEGO minifigures. The cons are that the Episode IV sub-theme underperforms the overall LEGO Star Wars theme and this is the 6^th iteration of the Imperial Star Destroyer.

For now, it is one we will be keeping an eye on with a view to the future from a LEGO investment perspective, but this is very much a model to build and display so head to LEGO to preorder yours today!
