London-based artist Lakwena Maciver has revealed her latest artwork, the Kaleidowaves mural, which was inspired by the storytelling potential of the new LEGO Disney Castle. The mural, standing at 4.5m tall, showcases a castle window and incorporates 220,000 LEGO bricks. Lakwena’s children, Aroko (4 years old) and Makelo (6 years old), were present at the unveiling ceremony in London and assisted with the placement of the final bricks.

Lakwena draws inspiration from the Disney characters that captured her imagination as a child and continue to captivate her sons today. Reflecting on her artistic vision, she mentions watching Disney videos repeatedly during her childhood in Ethiopia in the 90s. Additionally, her visits to the Ashdown Forest in the UK, which served as the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh, played a significant role in shaping her artistic perspective. Lakwena also values how films like The Lion King provide an opportunity to discuss her ancestral homeland with her young family. The enchanting possibilities that Disney masterfully portrays have profoundly influenced Lakwena’s creativity as an artist.

The design created by Lakwena is part of a series of four murals developed in collaboration with two other artists who were similarly influenced by Disney during their childhoods – Amy Jones, based in Paris, and Kristin Texeira, based in the US. These captivating murals showcase beloved Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Woody, Ariel, Tiana, Mirabel, Buzz Lightyear, and Daisy Duck, all of whom are featured in LEGO Disney sets. Each artist imbues the murals with their own unique style.

Families have the opportunity to participate in free events to construct the remaining three murals. These events will take place near the LEGO Store in Paris from July 7th to 9th, at the Manchester Arndale from July 14th to 16th, and at Pier 17, The Seaport in New York from

July 27th to 29th. Furthermore, individuals can create their own LEGO castle window online at www.LEGO.com/castle or visit a local LEGO store for more information.
