Set Details

The LEGO® Ideas Medieval Blacksmith (21325) model lovingly recreates the architectural details of a three-level building from the Middle Ages. With LEGO style, it showcases a fully furnished bedroom, kitchen, and workshop reminiscent of a real medieval blacksmith’s smithy. The set features a glowing forge with a LEGO light brick, as well as a garden with buildable models of an apple tree and a well. To bring the scene to life, there are four minifigures including a blacksmith, archer, and two Black Falcon Knights, along with various weapons and a posable horse figure with a buildable cart. Designed as part of a collection of inspiring LEGO sets for adults, this building kit is a unique and creative gift option for LEGO enthusiasts.

Investment Potential

A soon to retire set from the Ideas theme, LEGO Medieval Blacksmith is a great looking set, but will it make a strong investment going forward?

Currently in the “Last Chance” section on the LEGO.com site for its RRP of £159.99, this isn’t a greatly discounted set, albeit was available at a 20% discount at John Lewis recently (for £127.99). It is expected to be retired by the end of the year so there isn’t much time to get a set.

Theme Analysis

LEGO ideas is a very broad theme with all the sets having started as proposed ideas from the LEGO community and then voted upon as to which ones are popular enough to be made in to sets.

Historically the theme has performed very well generating annualised growth of 11%. Some of the popular retired sets are below including LEGO Ideas The Beatles Yellow Submarine (21306) which retired at the end of 2017 and is getting close to being worth 3 times its RRP of £55 (annualised growth of 19%). Another set that retired in 2017 is the Caterham Seven 620R which has increased 70% from its £75 RRP (10% annualised growth).

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth

Comparable Set Analysis

We have looked at some of the sets that aren’t in the Licensed or NASA sub-themes and again the broad picture is of very strong performance. There are definitely some sets which perform much stronger than other making it a set pickers theme.

At the 2 ends of the spectrum, LEGO Ideas Old Fishing Store (21310) has grown 170% in less than 5 years, delivering annualised growth of 23% whilst LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle (21313) has barely changed in value since retiring in 2019 (annualised growth of just 3%).

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay December 2021 £180 £269 49% 25%
21310 Old Fishing Store December 2018 £140 £379 171% 23%
21313 Ship in a Bottle December 2019 £70 £78 11% 3%
21305 Maze December 2016 £60 £129 115% 12%

Conclusion

This is a strong theme with some exceptional performances from some of the retired sets and we see no reason why this won’t be another one that performs well. The set is due to retire in the next couple of months and we would advise trying to pick one up if any discounts are seen soon (maybe on Black Friday?), hopefully the recent 20% off will be repeated.
