Lego Mickey Mouse
Lego Mickey Mouse Lego Disney 43179 Lego

43179 LEGO Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse Buildable Characters. A good LEGO Disney buy. When thinking of animated romantic duos there are many couples which might spring to mind; Tramp and Lady from Lady and the Tramp, Prince Charming and Cinderella, Homer and Marge Simpson to name but a few. But maybe the original couple which set the bar for all the others must be Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Making their official debut in the Walt Disney Studios animation ‘Steamboat Willie’ in 1928 the couple have remained firm favourites with the public across many decades.  Meeting the couple at Disneyland is a highlight for many, but if a visit to see them whilst on vacation is out of the question, a huge array of global merchandise is available for sale.

Set details

As part of the LEGO® Disney™ series, Mickey and Minnie have appeared in many sets since their first release in 2000. Initially aimed at the younger builders, the Mickey and Minnie LEGO sets now span the age ranges, with many sets now aimed at adult Disney collectors and enthusiasts. Just like the animated couple have evolved over the years, so have the LEGO characters, but set 43179 takes us back to a retro looking pair. Each standing on their own film cell base, which can be connected for a complete display piece, the large-scale Mickey and Minnie characters are full of detail once built from the 1,739 pieces. Fans of LEGO will be pleased to know that the set features some new and recoloured parts. Complete with their own buildable accessories, including a vintage camera, a guitar, flowers and photograph album, the characters look like they have just stepped out of a cartoon from years gone by and are a great tribute to the classic characters.

Investment Potential

The first sets within the Disney theme were launched in 2014 (called LEGO Disney Princess until 2016) and there have now been over 100 sets produced since then proving just how popular a theme it is. And nothing screams Disney more than Mickey and Minnie Mouse and these oversized character figures are very on brand! The set is available for £111.99 at LEGO or at £120 at Argos if LEGO sell out at Argos.

Theme Analysis

Over the last 8 years, the overall Disney theme has produced decent returns with annualised growth of 7% across the board, but this is still quite a wide theme.

There is now a Mickey and Friends sub-theme within the Disney theme, but this was only launched in 2021 so doesn’t give us any history to go on with regards to post retirement pricing.

Some sets within the wider Disney theme include:

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
41154 Cinderella’s Dream Castle November 2019 £70 £92 31% 9%
41148 Elsa’s Magical Ice Palace October 2018 £65 £69 6% 1%
41150 Moana’s Ocean Voyage January 2019 £40 £55 38% 8%

Comparable Set Analysis

There really are no directly comparable sets we can use for comparison which makes speculating about future price very difficult. This will be the first Mickey Mouse set to retire and there are no other equivalent large character sets within the Disney theme, so we have been quite conservative on out future price projections, anticipating growth of just 4% per annum.

Conclusion

It’s hard to recommend this set as an investment at RRP with little to go on. In its favour is that the set is due to retire at the end of 2022 and there are some decent discounts currently available ahead of that retirement. For us it would still just be a set to purchase for Disney fans rather than a long term investment, although it may be one that comes back to bite us!
